The advent of the personal computer in the early 1980s had a tremendous impact on all aspects of society. In the matter of a decade, companies like Microsoft and Apple went from a few hobbyists in garages to billion dollar business. Aside from the inroads into businesses and government sectors, one area that experienced tremendous growth for these companies was in the education sector. Apple, in particular, quickly found its way into secondary schools across the United States. Many children's first encounter with a computer was in a school lab on an Apple II, Apple IIe, or MacIntosh.
